Joe McGillivray: Charlie, Lee and Paul, Radley 1984

I was awarded my postgraduate diploma in 1983. Earlier that year I had been offered the role as Artist in Residence at Radley College which is just outside Oxford. The year was important to me as it provided the chance to paint full time and also participate in the life of the school. The head of the art department was an American from Louisiana called Charlie Mussett. He was both extremely supportive about my painting but also someone who I learnt a lot from in terms of art and also wider things including food and travel. A good friend of Charlie’s, Lee Beltzer was also at the time on a short termly secondment to the school from Brooklyn University. He was equally well travelled and he had a real interest in painting. He bought a number of paintings from me.
